Kherson Weekly: 19 April-16 May 2025
A “Weekly” Review of War-Related Events in & around Kherson

Given that a month has passed already since my last update, we have much to discuss in this issue of Kherson Weekly. First let me apologize for the absence–I’ve been working exhaustively on the Ukraine Daily Update Map. Readers may already know my primary role at both Tochnyi and Andrew’s Basement doing the news mapping, so it requires my attention first. And honestly, without first doing the work required in making the map, Kherson Weekly simply could not exist. So please, remember to visit the map I help create every day with Andrew and his team by clicking the button below.
Three New Drone Groups

NEW: The Clover Group
Photo: Clover Group
The Clover Group’s channel was initially created right at the beginning of the Human Safari in June 2024, releasing a weekly compilation video almost every week throughout late 2024 and early 2025. This group appears to be responsible for Russian drone attacks in northern Beryslavskyi Raion. We do not have a specific brigade or division to which they are subordinated or connected to just yet.

In a truly sick video compilation released by the Clover Group on “Victory Day,” we see what true Russian “victory” looks like–the genocidal murder of Ukrainians. The video begins with a civilian man standing still in a field. Perhaps he was attempting to avoid detection by the drone in hopes that it would pass him over for a more “valuable” target. As the drone slows and hangs above him, the man goes into a fetal position to brace for the impact of the grenade. The drone attacks the unarmed man via a skid-drop, raking the man’s back with shrapnel. As he rolls to his back in shock from his wounds, the Russian drone pilot murders the man with a fatal skid-drop near the man’s head. A personal note here–this is one of the most blatant and truly disgusting example of Russia’s genocidal Human Safari massacre in Kherson Oblast.

Kherson Police reported that a 47-year-old man from Sablukivka was killed via a Russian drone strike on 2 May. According to geolocated evidence, the strike in question took place just outside of the neighboring settlement of Kachkarivka, making this a likely match.
NEW: The Alpha Group
Photo: Alpha Group
The Alpha Group created their channel on 15 February 2025 and were immediately identified on 5 March by major Russian milblogger, Two Majors, as being linked to the 28th Motor Rifle Regiment of the 70th Motor Rifle Division. The 70th Motor Rifle Division is infamous for its failures in the Kherson Direction, namely the obliteration of the 17th Tank Regiment during the Battle of Krynky in 2023-2024. In addition to posting their war crimes, they also occasionally indulge their audience in pornographic or semi-pornographic content intended to be humorous. It’s a rather uniquely odd trait amongst all of the Kherson Direction Russian drone groups and correspondents in the mil-blogosphere, which felt worthy of at least a mention.

The Atomic Warriors are a drone group linked to the 1854th Motor Rifle Battalion, a territorial infantry battalion, according to UA Control Map. This group is operational roughly from Chervonyi Mayak in the north to Zmiivka in the south. A signature feature of their posting is that they share a lot of night-vision and thermal FPV drone footage.

3 people were hit via a thermal/night-vision FPV strike. Based on the video, only two people were seemingly hit by the FPV strike, while the third person was hiding a few meters away. This could be a couple of incidents reported in early May:
On 4 May, Kherson Police reported 3 police officers (ages 27, 42, and 45) were wounded via an FPV drone strike in Beryslav.
On 6 May, a 26 year-old man was killed and two other men, ages 54 & 57, were injured in a drone strike in the village of Chervonyi Yar.

Checking Back with Delta Group
Photo: Delta Group
I first brought to light the operations and suspected crimes of the Delta Group back in March. After two months, a check-up is warranted. This drone group’s typical modus operandi is to hold onto their drone footage until to be released as part of a weekly compilation. Occasionally, extra clips like airstrikes are posted outside of their regular posting practices.

More Molniya Drone Tactics: Deep Strikes

Photos: Kherson ODA
The 104th Guards Air Assault Division’s Molniya operators continued their terror tactics, although seemingly striking much deeper than they’ve shown previously. Typically, geolocated evidence has shown Molniya drones being used against structures in the villages of L’vove, Olhivka, Mykolaivka, and Burhunka, west-southwest of Beryslav. In mid April, they began to strike the village of Vysoke in Beryslav Raion–some 20-25 km from the Russian-occupied Left Bank of the Dnipro River.

Photo: Ukraine Daily Update Map
A series of Molniya-1 & Molniya-2 strikes targeted residential areas in the northwest portion of Vysoke throughout the third week of April 2025. Strikes were reported by Kherson Oblast officials in Vysoke seven days in a row, resulting in at least two civilian casualties. On 14 April, the Kherson ODA reported a 25 year-old mother and her 7 year-old son were both injured by a Russian UAV strike on a residential building around 9 pm. Based on video evidence shared by the 104th, we can see nighttime Molniya strikes were likely responsible for this war crime. Seemingly reaching a fever pitch on 19 April, four drones reportedly attacked the settlement–fortunately without casualties.

In the first deep Molniya strike video, To enable deeper Molniya strikes, the 104th reached for two munitions to supplant their usual TM-62 anti-tank mines. The first three-quarters of the video features the operations of the group’s sapper-engineer modifying munitions to construct a warhead for a Molniya-2 fixed-wing kamikaze drone. PTM-3 anti-vehicle mines were broken out of their MRL-deliverable canister, each weighing 4.9 kg, of which 1.8 kg are explosive material. Next, the sapper-engineer attached a MON-100 anti-personnel mine, weighing about 5 kg, of which 2 kg are explosive. These munitions are significantly lighter than the TM-62 mines, allowing the unit to extend the Molniya’s range deeper into Kherson. For comparison, a TM-62 weighs 9.5 kg, of which 5 kg are explosive. Changing the munition type and lightening the weight of the munition seemingly enabled these deeper attacks.
According to the video, the drone seemingly hit residential buildings in the northwestern part of Vysoke.

Another new feature of the 104th’s Molniya strikes is the implementation of thermal or night-vision capabilities. This video shows the operations of the navigator or pilot of one of the 104th’s drone teams under the cover of darkness, as he carries a Molniya-1 (identifiable by its nose-propeller) and its launching catapult to a launch site.
In this video, two separate Molniya strikes can be seen, targeting the same residential neighborhood in the town as that shown in the previous video.

Russian FPV Interceptions

Photos: Kirill Fedorov
Russian forces have been publishing footage of their anti-drone warfare efforts in the Kherson Direction, characterized mostly by FPV interceptions of various classes of Ukrainian drones. C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Systems) warfare is being conducted by units subordinate to the 61st Guards Naval Infantry Brigade and the newly formed Integrated Electronic Anti-Drone Warfare Unit “KRAB,” subordinate to the 49th Combined Arms Army Corps.
For more on KRAB and their crucial role in Russian operations in the Kherson Direction, see my previous investigation into one of their team members, here.

Photo: Kirill Fedorov
Based purely on a visual analysis of these three intercepted quadcopters, I can confidently say they are NOT Vampire, HeavyShot, R-18, Kazhan, or Nemesis drones. The first interception provides the clearest view of this platform. If you are interested in seeing more of these, I’ve already talked about them in Kherson Weekly, but I did mistakenly call it a new Nemesis variant. I’ll accept the loss on that, but I’m excited about this platform. Check out that previous article from late January 2025 below.
They appear to be most like Kazhan drones in physical form, but they also have a satellite terminal attached to the top of the chassis, which is characteristic of only. Kazhan does not have any known models with satellite guidance and Nemesis does not have a chassis that looks anything like these ones. The landing gear are specifically different–unlike that of both Kazhan and Nemesis. We do not have a known name for this platform. I think I know who the manufacturer is, but until I have confirmation from official sources, I will leave it at that. Still, another satellite heavy bomber drone could prove incredibly effective in disrupting logistics several kilometers behind the Left Bank, ambushing rotations of Russian infantry to frontline positions, or eliminating groups of Russian crossing the Dnipro in boats or hiding amongst the Dnipro Delta’s islands.

Given the importance of reconnaissance UAVs in designating targets for strike UAVs, artillery, and other guided munitions, perhaps Ukrainian UAV operators will adapt to the threat of FPV interceptors much like the Russians have. In recent months, Russian forces have added rear-facing cameras to their ZALA and Supercam reconnaissance UAVs to prevent Ukrainian FPV interceptors from approaching them from behind.
To read more on FPV interceptions, please check out my Tochnyi colleague Artem’s incredible research into Ukrainian FPV interceptors being used against Russian reconnaissance and strike UAVs.

Data: Brendan Kelley
Russian drone attacks across Kherson Oblast have risen to almost 2100 per week in the last three weeks. After a lull in late March and early April, these past three weeks have been the most dangerous stretch of time since late February to mid-March. Overall, successful Russian drone attacks are climbing, but they remain below their peak in mid-March. The number of Russian drones destroyed has also been generally higher than when we last discussed these operations six weeks ago, although lower than the peak in early March. With closer inspection, we can see some trends specific to Khersonska Hromada and some specific to the other territories in Kherson Raion and all of Beryslav Raion.
Khersonska Urban Hromada
Weekly attacks inside Kherson city and its surrounding communities have hovered around 500 per week since March, yet late April and early May have seen weekly attacks rise steadily from 500 to almost 750 per week. This shows Russian forces are working back up to their peak of activity, stretching from late February to mid-March. The proportion of those attacks which yielded successful Russian drone strikes have risen beyond their mid-March peak of 128. Six weeks ago, just 54 successful strikes were recorded in Kherson, but they hit a new peak with 167 successful Russian strikes recorded in the Urban Hromada in mid-May. Despite the overall volume of attacks in Kherson city being lower by a third or even half in April and May, they are proving to be significantly more effective.
Outside Khersonska Hromada
Despite the increase in volume of attacks, it does seem that the level of successful drone strikes outside Khersonska Urban Hromada have remained low. In comparison to February and March 2025, the volume of drone attacks was significantly less and Russian strikes were far more successful. In April and May 2025, Russian drone attacks were consistently over 1200 per week, while approaching 1600 attacks at the peak. While in February and March, drone attacks were peaking around 1200 and only averaging just over 1000. For fives weeks straight in between February and March, there were over 300 successful Russian drone strikes per week. However, the last five weeks have yielded less than 300 successful strikes per week. This drop in successful Russian drone strikes outside Khersonska Urban Hromada also corresponds to a significant increase in destroyed Russian drones, perhaps suggesting a significant expansion of Ukrainian C-UAS operations in the more peripheral communities of Kherson & Beryslav Raions.

Kherson Direction
Continuing our analysis from several months ago, we can see the continuing trend of Russian offensive actions ramping up in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, while activity in the Kherson Direction has remained relatively constant since, albeit in much less volume than what we saw in December and January. Brief spikes appear every so often in the reports from Ukraine’s Operational Command South, but the daily average of Russian riverine assaults in the Kherson Direction remains low at 1.5. Oddly enough, the most active day for Russian assaults was “Victory Day,” on which there was supposed to be a temporary truce or ceasefire, declared by the Russians themselves.
Orikhiv Direction
Russian attention toward Orikhiv is nothing compared to what it was earlier this year in early March, but still it remains the focus of the Russian forces along the Southern Front. The days leading up to the “Victory Day” truce were particularly active, as Russian forces sought to expand territorial control prior to any potential official ceasefire or settlement that may have resulted from the ongoing “peace negotiations.” Six assaults occurred on “Victory Day” itself, according to the reports from Operation Command South.
Huliaipole Direction
Since peaking in mid-April, offensive action near the city of Huliaipole in northeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast has essentially stopped, with reports of offensive groups being formed, battered units refitted, and logistics improved. There was a brief spike in activity leading up to the “Victory Day” truce, but since 7 May, no offensive actions have been taken by Russian forces in this direction.
